Which Grade?

No matter what stage you are at in your career, there is an IGEM grade for you depending on your qualifications, skills and experience.

Joining IGEM is a simple step process regardless of if you're an individual or company wanting to join.  Learn more about the membership grades and see which is the correct fit for you.  Not sure, then you can join as an Associate and our membership team will assist in moving your grade once you've joined.

Individual Membership

Associate (AIGEM)

The quickest way to get involved as an IGEM member. Joining as an associate is simple, and open to all in the gas industry.  Once joined you can access IGEM benefits, and work with the membership team to progress to other membership grades, or get support in achieving professional registration.

Seeking professional registration

Professional registration with the Engineering Council is the definitive measure of a successful career in engineering and is global recognition of your knowledge and experience.

We can help you on your professional registration journey, whether you are pursuing EngTech, IEng or CEng status. 

Chartered Engineer (CEng)

Chartered Engineers develop solutions to complex engineering problems using new or existing technologies, and through innovation, creativity and technical analysis. Their academic knowledge is at master's level or equivalent. Find out more about becoming a Chartered Engineer.

Incorporated Engineer (IEng)

Incorporated Engineers maintain and manage applications of current and developing technology, and may undertake engineering design, development, manufacture, construction and operation. Their academic knowledge is at bachelor's level or equivalent. Find out more about becoming an Incorporated Engineer.

Engineering Technician (EngTech)

Engineering Technicians apply proven techniques and procedures to the solution of practical engineering problems. They are able to demonstrate learning to NVQ/SQV level 3 or similar. Find out more about becoming an Engineering Technician.

Member Manager (MIGEM)

If you have experience in a senior management position within the gas industry, you could become a Member Manager. To be eligible, you will need to have either four years’ experience within senior management, or an engineering qualification at equivalent NVQ level 3 or higher and at least two years’ experience working at a senior level.

An established engineer or manager

If you are working as an engineer or technician, in a middle or senior management position or a non-engineering role within an organisation connected with gas then you can join as an Associate.

There’s no assessment of your qualifications or experience linked to this grades and you can still access all the same member benefits.

Working in the downstream gas sector

If your work involves gas at the point of use, we have two grades that will demonstrates your commitment to professional excellence to your customers and colleagues: Gas Technician and Licensed Gas Technician. 

To become a Gas Technician, you need a valid Gas Safe registration you must agree to abide by our code of conduct. We’ll also ask you to confirm that you have read and understood our complaints and disciplinary procedures. 

Licensed Gas Technicians (LGT), have been Gas Safe registered for two or more consecutive years and can demonstrate sufficient knowledge and industry experience to comply with our competence and commitment criteria. 

Just starting out in your career

Student membership is free to apprentices or undergraduate students studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) subjects.

If you have recently graduated from any BSc, BEng or MEng course, you can take advantage of our Graduate membership. Join within 12 months of your graduation and you’ll pay no application fee and you’ll qualify for a reduced subscription fee for the first year. 

Joining at this stage of your career is a great time to get on the ladder of professional registration and our team of experts can guide you through the process if you wish to pursue EngTech, IEng or CEng status.

Company Membership

Company Membership

If your business is related to the gas industry, you could join IGEM as a Company Member.  IGEM Company Members benefit from being part of a community of gas businesses, both big and small, at the cutting edge of gas operations.
