IGEM is the professional engineering institution for gas, here to support individuals and organisations connected with the industry. As advocates of excellence, our core aim is to help all those involved with gas to achieve and maintain the highest standards of professional competence.
We write the standards and guidance the gas industry abide by.
IGEM hosts a full calendar of events and training throughout the year.
We are licensed by the Engineering Council to award the professional titles Engineering Technican (EngTech), Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and Chartered Engineer (CEng). If your goal is to become professionally registered and achieve one of these titles then IGEM can help.
I’m an engineer responsible for delivering complex and diverse innovation portfolios. Achieving the status of Chartered Engineer has given my employer great confidence in my ability and professional competencies. I have since been able to take on even larger, challenging projects than ever before. Being Chartered lends credibility, reassures stakeholders and peers that they’re working with a competent engineer with a proven ability to deliver new services and technology for complex systems with significant levels of risk around the world.

As an IGEM member, I’ve met lots of new people and by joining and sitting on the Gas Transmission and Distribution Committee I’ve learnt a lot about IGEM standards and industry best practice. Hopefully I’ve also made a positive contribution to the ongoing safety of the network.

Our membership of IGEM delivers this exceptionally well for the gas industry, connecting us at the right level with those people who define and implement strategy within the UK’s gas utilities. We exhibit at IGEM’s Annual Conference and at regional events whenever the content is appropriate to us and always find that they deliver excellent value for money. We have also spoken at IGEM events and enjoyed the expert views and warm interaction that has ensued. We can wholeheartedly recommend IGEM membership to any organisation that wants to engage in the right way with the UK’s gas industry.

As an IGEM member and Chair of the Hydrogen Working Group, I get to work with colleagues from across organisations to explore hydrogen's potential to support the UK’s transition to a low carbon energy sector and the standards that will be required to ensure that customers remain safe.

I wanted to increase the presence of women in engineering, and to help encourage more women into the industry. I always enjoy speaking with new people and expanding my network, and IGEM is a brilliant platform for this. Being a member of IGEM has really opened my eyes to the wider industry, especially with the access to the Hydrogen Knowledge Centre through the connections I have made with other members. I hope that being an IGEM member will not only help me with my career, but also allow me to help others with theirs.

IGEM’s Housing Partner membership provides our organisation with in-depth industry specific knowledge through several publications and access to 34 IGEM standards relevant to the domestic and commercial practices for the housing sector, as well as access to IGEM technical services. In addition, we’ve enjoyed exceptional staff development opportunities through online learning, networking, and attending events. We have benefitted greatly from our Housing Partner membership in a short period and look forward to playing an active role moving forward.

On more than one occasion, being an Incorporated Engineer has helped me to stand out. Now that I have many years’ experience working in the sector, membership of IGEM provides me with the opportunity to help others gain the same competitive advantage, which is why I sit on IGEM’s Professional Development Committee.
