Overview of Matters of Gas Safety (MoGS), Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS) and other Routes to competence

Before being accepted on the Gas Safe Register, engineers are required to demonstrate their competence in the type of work they wish to be registered for. Each work type has specific ‘Matters of Gas Safety’ that need to be demonstrated.

The Matters of Gas Safety criteria can either be demonstrated within a qualification or via the Nationally Accredited Certification Scheme (ACS).

Gas Safe Registered engineers are required to renew their certificates of competency every 5 years, and this can be done either by ACS renewal or via the Group Competency Scheme.

Where a Gas Safe Registered engineer wishes to extend their competencies to additional appliances or work types, they will need to complete training prior to demonstrating competence via ACS.
