What We Do
FEN brings together the views and expertise of our members and key industry groups to influence decision makers in the energy sector.
While also supporting the networks of today, we aim to help decision makers fully understand the potential of the gas networks to help the UK meet its ambitious decarbonisation targets as part of a whole energy system approach.
We’re working to raise the profile of green gases, including hydrogen and biomethane. Harnessing these cutting-edge solutions for heat, power and industry will help keep customer bills as low as possible, reduce the need for expensive domestic changes and contribute to a cleaner, greener future.
Our Members
FEN’s current members include the owner and operator of the GB gas transmission network, National Gas, and the four Gas Distribution Networks (GDNs) – Cadent Gas, Northern Gas Networks, SGN and Wales & West Utilities. Five networks with operations in Northern Ireland – Evolve, Gas Networks Ireland, Kinecx Energy, Mutual Energy and Phoenix Energy – are associate members of FEN.

The Gas Industry
Providing energy to 21.5 million homes and nearly 500,000 businesses, Britain’s gas networks play a crucial role in preserving and enhancing national energy security. Consisting of over 280,000km of pipes, enough to stretch around the globe seven times, gas networks are 99.99% reliable. On average, customers experience an interruption in supply just once every 40 years.
Britain’s gas networks are similar to a transport infrastructure system, moving gas to homes, businesses and industries across the country. This world class infrastructure also transports gas to power stations, which generate much of the country’s electricity.
Most of the gas currently transported in these pipes is methane in the form of natural gas. However, in partnership with our member companies, we are actively working with industry and government to use the gas networks to transport renewable gases such as hydrogen and biomethane. With the right support from government, gas networks have the potential to play a game-changing role in the decarbonisation of our energy system.
Different companies operate separate sections of the gas distribution network, while Britain’s gas transmission network is owned and run by National Gas.
