Spotlight on Company Members: Bascom-Turner Instruments

At IGEM, we love to shine a spotlight on our Company Members. This month, we feature Bascom-Turner Instruments, a manufacturer of gas detection equipment, with insights from Simon Mills, European Director of Sales and Safety

As the gas industry prepares for a more diverse mix of gases, reliable detection remains fundamental to protecting engineers, customers and the public. This means the technology must evolve alongside the fuels it is designed to detect.

Bascom-Turner Instruments develops equipment that helps gas professionals identify leaks and work safely across both established and emerging applications.

Simon Mills, European Director of Sales and Safety, explains what prompted Bascom-Turner Instruments to become an IGEM Company Member and how membership supports its work in the UK gas industry.

He said: “As a manufacturer of gas detection instruments and equipment, we were looking for ways to further promote our brand and products within the UK gas industry. 

“After exploring different membership options, we identified that IGEM represents the gas industry in the UK and is best placed for us to engage with the sector. Becoming a Company Member allows us to support the industry while showcasing our gas detection equipment and innovation.”

Since joining, IGEM has supported Bascom-Turner Instruments through a range of opportunities to engage with the wider gas community.

Simon said: “IGEM has enabled us to attend industry conferences and events, which are key for networking and staying connected with developments across the sector.

“It has also provided valuable opportunities to promote our business, such as being featured in the May 2025 edition of Gi, helping to raise awareness of our products and capabilities.”

One of the main benefits is the ability to connect and network with other professionals across the gas industry, said Simon.  

He added: “It allows us to build relationships, maintain existing contacts and promote our brand and products to a wider audience.

“The IGEM website is also a valuable resource for keeping up to date with upcoming events, conferences and wider industry activity.”

In addition to business development, IGEM membership also supports the ongoing development of Bascom-Turner Instruments’ UK-based staff.

Simon said: “Although our head office and manufacturing facility are based in Norwood, Massachusetts, IGEM provides important support for our UK team.

“Access to IGEM standards, ACS updates, and resources such as MyIGEM and the Hydrogen Knowledge Centre ensures our staff stay informed and continue their professional development in a fast-moving industry.”

Looking ahead, Simon shared his company’s perspective on the future of gas, and the role gas detection instruments will play.

He said: “Gas remains an important fuel for heating homes and providing energy. As the industry evolves towards renewable gas, biomethane and hydrogen, there is clearly a future for gas.

“At Bascom-Turner Instruments, we will continue to innovate and develop gas detection equipment to support both existing and emerging gases, ensuring safety remains a priority across the industry.”

Simon also emphasised the company’s ongoing commitment to research and development.
