IGEM supports Carbon Monoxide Awareness Campaign this summer
As people spend more time travelling, camping, enjoying staycations and making the most of the warmer weather, the Carbon Monoxide Awareness Campaign is once again encouraging everyone to take simple steps to stay safe.
IGEM is proud to support the campaign and help raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide.
Those working in the gas industry understand the risks better than most. Carbon monoxide remains one of the biggest preventable safety risks associated with fuel burning appliances, yet many people are still unaware that it cannot be seen, smelled or tasted.
This summer provides an opportunity for IGEM members to use their expertise to reinforce important safety messages with customers, colleagues, friends and family.
Helping people stay safe
The campaign encourages everyone to take responsibility for their own safety, whether at home or away. Simple actions can make a significant difference, including:
- Installing a carbon monoxide alarm in every room containing a fuel burning appliance
- Testing alarms regularly to ensure they are working correctly
- Having appliances serviced by a suitably qualified engineer
- Recognising that carbon monoxide poisoning can affect anyone, anywhere
- If you know or suspect you have a gas emergency e.g. smell of gas, gas escape, suspected Carbon monoxide CO release; contact the national gas emergency number: 0800 111 999
For those travelling this summer, the campaign also encourages people to consider taking a carbon monoxide alarm with them when staying away from home, whether in the UK or abroad.
Using our expertise to make a difference
Gas engineers and industry professionals have an important role to play in helping improve public awareness.
A conversation during an annual service, a reminder to test an alarm or advice on where alarms should be installed can all help reinforce good safety habits.
