Fellow announcement: Gordon Ng
A distinguished career in gas engineering, hydrogen safety and professional development has seen Gordon Ng, Technical Secretary at the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) of the Government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), elected as a Fellow of IGEM.
Throughout his career, Gordon has combined technical leadership with a strong commitment to professional development, science education and the future of the energy sector. His work has helped advance hydrogen safety in Hong Kong, support the development of engineering professionals and inspire the next generation of talent.
During his time as Senior Engineer on Hydrogen Fuel Safety at EMSD, Gordon played an instrumental role in establishing the foundations for hydrogen energy safety in Hong Kong. He led the preparation of Hong Kong’s first Code of Practice for Hydrogen Fuelled Vehicles, applying established gas safety principles to an emerging energy technology and supporting the development of a robust safety framework for hydrogen applications.
Gordon has also been a strong advocate for knowledge sharing and public engagement. He served as Convenor of the Organising Committee for the inaugural International Hydrogen Development Symposium 2025, the first government-led hydrogen industry event in Hong Kong. The symposium attracted more than 800 participants and over 70 speakers, providing a valuable platform for discussion and collaboration across the hydrogen sector.
His commitment to inspiring future talent extends to science education. Gordon contributed to the first government-led hydrogen science education event, the Hydrogen Zero Carbon STEAM Carnival.
In his current role as Technical Secretary at EMSD, he also convened the HydroRace Challenge during Hydrogen Week in May 2026. The hydrogen fuel cell remote model car competition encouraged students to explore hydrogen technology, develop their interest in science and engineering, and discover potential pathways into the gas and energy industry.
Gordon’s contribution to IGEM and the wider profession spans more than two decades. Since joining the Institution in 2004, he has held several voluntary positions, including Vice Chair and Honorary Secretary of the IGEM Far East District Section (FEDS). He has also served as a Professional Review Interviewer for more than 10 years, mentoring and assessing candidates working towards membership.
His own professional journey includes a notable IGEM achievement. In 2006, Gordon won the final of the IGEM Young Persons Paper Competition (YPPC), becoming the first Chinese competitor to achieve this distinction. More recently, he participated in IGEM’s Presidential Visit to the Chinese Mainland in April 2026, continuing his active engagement with the Institution and the international gas engineering community.
On receiving his Fellowship, Gordon shared: “I am truly honoured to have been elected as a Fellow of IGEM. This recognition represents not only a significant milestone in my professional journey but also a validation of my lifelong commitment to advancing the gas engineering profession, particularly in the field of hydrogen safety and science education.
“Receiving the grade of Fellow is both a humbling recognition of my contributions to the gas industry and a source of great personal pride. It affirms my belief that the gas engineering profession has a vital role to play in the global energy transition, and that our collective efforts, whether in hydrogen safety, professional mentoring or public education, will shape a cleaner, safer and more sustainable future.
