Recognising the impact of women across the gas industry
This International Women in Engineering Day (INWED), IGEM is celebrating the achievements, expertise and impact of women across the gas industry, while recognising the importance of creating a more diverse and inclusive engineering profession.
This year’s theme, #EngineeringIntelligence, highlights the creativity, innovation and problem-solving skills that engineers bring to some of the world’s biggest challenges. From advancing energy systems to improving safety and supporting the transition to a sustainable future, engineers play a vital role in shaping what comes next.
Women engineers are a crucial part of this future, yet they remain significantly under-represented across the profession. According to EngineeringUK, women currently make up just 17% of the UK engineering and technology workforce, highlighting the continued need to inspire, attract and retain women throughout their careers.
A more diverse workforce brings different perspectives, experiences and ideas, helping to strengthen innovation and build a more resilient industry. This is why IGEM continues to champion equity, diversity and inclusion across the gas engineering community.
Through our Women in Gas initiatives, we provide opportunities for connection, professional development and knowledge sharing, helping to support women at every stage of their careers. Our Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Group continues to guide this work, helping to create an environment where all gas professionals can thrive.
The engineering and technology sector needs around 240,000 people to join the workforce each year, making it essential to attract talent from the widest possible pool. Increasing representation is not only important for equality, but also for ensuring the sector has the skills, expertise and diverse thinking needed to meet future challenges.
At IGEM, we believe that sharing the experiences and achievements of women engineers helps inspire the next generation and demonstrates the wide range of opportunities available within our profession.
This International Women in Engineering Day, we celebrate the women already making a difference across the gas industry and reaffirm our commitment to supporting a more inclusive future for engineering.
