Hydrogen: a critical piece of the energy system puzzle

This year's Policy conference focuses on whole energy system planning, domestic heating and flexible power generation – with a keynote session to set the scene for hydrogen across policy and regulation.

As an energy vector and fuel to unlock net zero, hydrogen is often assessed by its potential to decarbonise different sectors. But hydrogen is much bigger than that – and it’s not just a UK drive behind this, it’s a global movement towards it. It needs unleashing from debates around niche uses and moving into an economy-wide deployment space – where customers’ needs for a secure and affordable energy system are fulfilled in a way that successfully meets the key 2050 climate change target.

Session 1 will feature two keynote speeches from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero giving updates to the gas sector on their portfolio of hydrogen policy activity and the latest on hydrogen production. We also have a keynote from Ofgem providing the regulator’s perspective on the gas grid and the potential for whole systems regulation.

Session 2 will take the form of a panel discussion, comprising gas and electricity networks, debating the subject of whole systems planning and delivery.

Session 3 will introduce presentations on hydrogen demonstrators, community trials and rollout, including the latest on retrofits, H100, the village proposals and what’s next.

Session 4 will focus on flexible electricity generation with representatives from the CCGT and reciprocating engine community, leaning on the potential for operating with hydrogen in the future.

There will plenty of opportunities for delegates to ask questions and network with like-minded colleagues.
