The whole IGEM community mourns the loss of Her Majesty The Queen
It is with great sadness that, on behalf of our members, we extend our sincere and deepest condolences to His Majesty The King for the loss of his mother, and to the wider Royal Family.
Her Majesty worked tirelessly in service to the people of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, and also served our Institution since choosing to become our Patron in 1953. Before the Coronation took place, we gratefully received the following on behalf The Queen:
Her Majesty The Queen, in response to a loyal petition signed by the President and Secretary on behalf of all members of the Institution, has been graciously pleased to grant her patronage to the Institution of Gas Engineers.
The Queen visited gas industry events throughout her reign, and we were always very pleased to attend special occasions for chosen charities and patronages, and to receive Loyal Greetings from Her Majesty at our Annual General Meeting, most recently in May of this year.
It was only very recently that we were looking back at 70 years of service through the long, happy and prosperous reign of Queen Elizabeth II as part of the Platinum Jubilee celebrations – a reign that our President at the time of Her Majesty’s Coronation, J I Haynes, had hoped for.
We have been incredibly proud to have The Queen as our Patron. Her reign has witnessed a great deal of change in the gas industry; from the days of coal gas and conversion to natural gas, through to the emergence of biomethane and now the dawn of clean hydrogen that can be used to power businesses, heat homes, fuel transport and generate electricity. Undoubtedly more change will come as energy and engineering innovation keeps moving onwards.
Our thoughts and prayers remain with the Royal Family during this time of sorrow.
God Save The King.
