Supporting safety beyond borders: IGEM and the Carbon Monoxide Safe 4 Summer 2025 Campaign
As a long-standing supporter of the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG), IGEM is proud to back this year’s Carbon Monoxide Safe 4 Summer 2025 campaign, with a focused effort to protect holidaymakers and young travellers from carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning risks during the peak travel season.
From 21 July to 31 August 2025, the campaign, coordinated by APPCOG with Policy Connect, seeks to amplify awareness of CO dangers in holiday settings, especially abroad, including hostels, homestays, and short-term lets where fuel-burning appliances may not meet UK safety standards.
Remembering Hudson Foley: The Pack Safe Appeal
This summer’s campaign builds on the impact of the Pack Safe Appeal, launched in memory of Hudson Foley, who tragically lost his life to carbon monoxide poisoning at age 24 while staying in a homestay in Ecuador. Hudson’s story is a powerful and heartbreaking reminder that CO safety is not guaranteed when travelling abroad.
Through this appeal, his family and campaigners have been calling for one simple action 'Pack a carbon monoxide alarm'. A £20 device could save a life.
In 2025, the campaign continues to tell Hudson’s story and promote real-world action, with survivor testimonies and safety advocates raising their voices to protect others from the same fate. The Pack Safe Appeal has already driven growing awareness among young travellers, students, and families but much more needs to be done to ensure safety becomes standard practice.
Why this campaign matters to the gas industry
While those working in gas and safety sectors understand the threat posed by CO, travellers often do not. International travel often places people in unfamiliar environments with unknown appliance standards and the consequences can be fatal.
IGEM members and colleagues across the sector are encouraged to:
- Share campaign messaging and safety tips
- Educate customers, contractors and travel partners on portable British Standard-compliant CO alarms
- Support awareness by amplifying survivor stories and public-facing advice
This is also an opportunity for our sector to demonstrate leadership, showing how industry knowledge and compassion can work hand in hand to prevent avoidable tragedies.
Join us in supporting safety
As IGEM continues its collaboration with APPCOG and Policy Connect, we urge all sector stakeholders including engineers, suppliers, networks and educators to support and share this vital summer campaign.
Together, we can extend the reach of critical safety knowledge, protect lives, and honour victims like Hudson Foley with meaningful action.
