Staying safe this winter – IGEM supports Carbon Monoxide Awareness Week 2025

As temperatures drop and boilers, gas fires and cookers see heavier use, Carbon Monoxide (CO) Awareness Week,17–23 November, is a timely reminder of why continued vigilance matters.

IGEM is once again proud to support this national campaign, led by the All-Party Parliamentary Carbon Monoxide Group (APPCOG) and Policy Connect, to help raise awareness of the dangers of carbon monoxide and the simple steps people can take to stay safe this winter.

A shared responsibility

Those working in the gas industry understand the risks of CO better than anyone. But many members of the public still underestimate how easily it can occur and how deadly it can be.

Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that can be produced by everyday household appliances such as:

  • Boilers and gas cookers
  • Gas fires and stoves
  • Fireplaces, barbeques and patio heaters

With colder weather prompting increased use of these appliances, this campaign is an important opportunity for IGEM members to play their part in keeping homes and the public safe.

What members can do

As experts trusted by the public, IGEM members can make a real difference by:

  • Encouraging customers to have appliances serviced regularly by qualified engineers
  • Reminding householders to install and test BS EN 50291-compliant CO alarms
  • Sharing advice on recognising the symptoms of CO poisoning (headache, dizziness, nausea, confusion)
  • Reinforcing the emergency response: If you suspect a CO leak turn off appliances if safe to do so, open windows, get everyone outside, and call 0800 111 999

Raising awareness together

CO Awareness Week is also a moment to refresh our own knowledge and strengthen our collective voice. By taking part and sharing accurate information, we can help more people stay safe this winter.
