Spotlight on EngTech: Sean Sanders

We spotlight the career of IGEM Engineering Technician (EngTech) member Sean Sanders, who demonstrates the value of CPD and how professional registration was key in securing his current role as Gas Technical Operations Manager at EDF Energy.

Sean began his career in the gas industry with British Gas. He explained: “I started at the sharp end, learning the realities of gas work from day one.

“That early experience gave me a solid grounding in how gas systems operate in the real world and, just as importantly, the responsibility that comes with working in a safety-critical industry.”

Sean moved through a variety of gas-related roles, gaining broader experience across different environments, before joining EDF. Initially working within the Quality Assurance team, he later transitioned into Gas Technical Assurance.

Sean said: “That marked a key point in my career, shifting my focus from checking compliance to actively shaping technical standards, competence, and safe working practices.”

In his current role at EDF, Sean provides technical oversight, supporting field operatives and ensuring gas work is carried out safely, competently, and in line with industry standards. He works closely with colleagues at all levels, from engineers in the field to senior stakeholders, often applying engineering judgment where guidance alone isn’t enough.

He said: “Some standout moments have been passing industry audits and representing EDF at industry meetings, contributing to wider discussions and sharing practical insight from an operational perspective.”

Looking ahead, Sean plans to continue developing as a professional engineer, building on his EngTech status toward Incorporated Engineer (IEng), while remaining grounded in real-world gas engineering.

Becoming an IGEM EngTech member was a natural step for Sean. He explained: “I wanted my experience, competence, and responsibility to be recognised against an external professional standard, not just internally.

“EngTech reflects the reality of many gas engineering roles: practical, technical, and safety-critical. It recognises engineers who apply knowledge every day, make informed decisions, and understand the consequences of getting things wrong.

“One of the biggest benefits of my IGEM membership has been networking opportunities. Events such as the President’s Ball and various conferences have allowed me to connect with professionals from different organisations.

Sean added: “A particular highlight each year is the Gas Utilisation Conference. It’s essential for staying current with industry developments, emerging challenges, and best practice. These events don’t just share information; they encourage discussion, challenge thinking, and help raise standards across the industry.”

Sean also values the CPD recording and management platform as essential for career progression. He recently completed IGEM Professional Review Assessor training to support others through their professional registration journey.

Sean added: “In gas engineering, experience alone isn’t enough; engineers must demonstrate that they apply their knowledge safely and consistently.

“EngTech isn’t just valuable, it’s essential. Without it, I wouldn’t be in my current role, as professional registration is required for certain positions. That alone highlights its importance in the industry.”

For those considering career progression, Sean advises: “Take your development seriously and don’t underestimate the value of professional recognition. Learn the fundamentals properly, ask questions, and understand why standards and procedures exist.”

Sean believes gas will continue to play an important role in the UK’s energy landscape, particularly during the transition to low-carbon alternatives.

He said: “If the industry moves toward hydrogen blends or even 100% hydrogen, it will require strong engineering controls, robust standards, and highly competent engineers. That transition is something I’m genuinely looking forward to being part of. Supporting the safe evolution of gas networks and utilisation systems is exactly where professional engineering, industry collaboration, and institutions like IGEM will be most important.”
