Project Name: Streatham Road
Scheme background: The project was a collaborative effort involving SGN, Forefront Utilities, FM Conway, and Merton Council, working within the London Borough of Merton. Although SGN led the works, the scheme required continuous coordination between multiple stakeholders to ensure smooth delivery.
In addition to scheduled conference calls, supplementary meetings were held between FM Conway, Merton Council, the Greater London Authority (GLA), and SGN to maintain momentum. These meetings focused on defining roles and responsibilities, including cost-sharing agreements, traffic management (TM) plans, excavation responsibilities, and reinstatement arrangements.
The works commenced on 26th August 2025 and took approximately 187 days to complete. SGN began on Streatham Road, progressing towards the junction of Seely Road. SGN worked ahead of FM Conway, who followed closely behind to begin resurfacing as part of the cycle scheme. SGN carried out backfilling to a specified level, followed by temporary reinstatement to allow Riney to continue subsequent works.
The scope of SGN’s works included the installation of 824.8 metres of new polyethylene (PE) gas main and the abandonment of 428 metres of redundant metallic main.
Throughout the project, effective communication was vital. Key stakeholders included, but were not limited to:
- Greater London Authority (GLA)
- FM Conway (Lambeth Contractor)
- Merton Council
- Forefront Utilities
- SGN
- Transport for London (TfL) Buses
- Local Businesses
