Potential heat pump targets: What’s on the horizon for boiler manufacturers?
Ministers are reportedly considering the introduction of sales targets for heat pumps in 2024, signaling a shift in the UK’s approach to renewable heating solutions.
Under this proposed initiative, boiler manufacturers could face penalties if they fail to meet specified annual heat pump sales targets. While this move aims to accelerate the adoption of more sustainable heating technologies, some manufacturers warn it may lead to increased boiler prices, potentially by as much as £180.
Sources indicate that the government has communicated its intentions to the industry, suggesting that implementation is on the horizon.
A spokesperson from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero emphasised the necessity of modernising British homes in light of recent energy challenges. They stated, “Our Warm Homes Plan aims to make homes more affordable and environmentally friendly, incorporating improvements like insulation, solar panels, and heat pumps.”
The government is expected to provide an update on the consultation regarding the Clean Heat Market Mechanism, with responses anticipated by April 2025.
