Net zero push to replace London gas lamps ‘would be act of vandalism’

Senior Conservative MPs have cautioned against the proposed replacement of London's iconic gas lamps with LED replicas, labeling it as an act of cultural vandalism.

Westminster council officials are considering the installation of eco-friendly lights, putting nearly 100 lamps in the capital at risk, particularly those without listed status.

The local authority argues that this move would contribute to their goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, but critics argue that it would compromise the historical significance of these lamps, which have been lighting up the streets since 1812.
