Staying Gas safe when working in the Built Environment Large Business Forum Guidance and Risk Assessments

IGEM’s Large Business Forum (LBF) encourages gas professionals to spread the word amongst fellow tradespeople and businesses, such as construction firms, FM & ME practitioners and housing repair/refurbish teams, of the dangers of interfering with existing gas installations and appliances when working in buildings.

The Gas Safety Installation and Use Regulations (GSIUR) place legal duties on all trades to keep gas installations safe. When businesses and tradespeople undertake planned or responsive property work that could affect the safety of existing gas installations, they have legal responsibilities and obligations to be observant and to ensure their work does not affect the safety of gas fittings.

In short, the Gas Safety Installation & Use Regulations (GSIUR) & HSE’s L56 ‘Regulation 8’ states: “This regulation prohibits anyone from carrying out any alteration to premises in which a gas fitting or storage vessel is already installed which could compromise gas safety. The regulation also prohibits any work on a gas fitting or associated flue/ventilation system which would result in danger to any person.”

The LBF with industry support have developed and produced various Guidance documents and Risk Assessments for businesses and tradespeople which are free to download.

Building projects – repairs & refurbishments

Two simple Risk Assessments that help both RGE’s & Non-Gas people ensure they keep gas fittings and gas users safe during building projects.

Fire Protection

Guidance for those working in buildings installing and maintaining ‘Fire Protection’ which will assist in keeping gas fittings and gas users safe.

LPG (Mobile) Cabinet Heaters

A simple Risk Assessment to assist RGE’s when they encounter these appliances.

It is extremely important all surveys and risk assessments are recorded and held on file for retrieval.
