IGEM response to publication of Engineers 2030 final report

IGEM warmly welcomes the publication of the Engineers 2030 final report by the National Engineering Policy Centre, led by the Royal Academy of Engineering. This report sets out a bold and necessary vision for the future of engineering in the UK, recognising the vital role engineers and technicians will play in addressing the challenges of climate change, digital transformation, infrastructure renewal and social equity.

We are particularly encouraged by the report’s focus on a resilient, inclusive and future-ready engineering workforce. The Engineers 2030 Vision and Principles emphasise adaptability, social responsibility, public trust, systems thinking, digital fluency and commercial awareness. These resonate strongly with IGEM’s own values and ambitions for the gas sector and it’s people.

The recommendations for modernising curricula, improving careers guidance and strengthening employer engagement are timely and practical. IGEM supports the call for coordinated action across government, industry, education providers and the engineering profession to deliver these reforms. We also welcome the establishment of the Royal Academy of Engineering’s Skills Centre, which will provide a vital platform for ongoing collaboration and progress.

As the professional home for gas engineers, IGEM recognises the importance of equipping our members with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in a rapidly changing world. We encourage all IGEM members to engage with the Engineers 2030 recommendations, reflect on their relevance to our sector and act proactively to help shape a profession that is innovative, diverse and trusted by the public.

The publication of this report represents an important step for engineering in the UK. IGEM will continue to engage with colleagues across the profession as the recommendations are considered and implemented, and remain committed to supporting the development of a skilled, adaptable and inclusive engineering workforce.
