IGEM CEO educates youngsters on future energy system

Oliver Lancaster, IGEM CEO, recently visited Bishop Childs Primary School in Cardiff to educate students on the energy system and the potentials for clean energy future.

The visit was arranged as part of Great Big Green Week which is the UK’s celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.

Over 90 students at the school took part in activities, where they identified how energy is used in the home.

Oliver said: "I chatted with the children about the energy system and how it needs to go to low carbon to help fight climate change.

"The children looked through different energy sources we have today, such as natural gas, biogas, wind, solar, nuclear, coal, biomass, tidal, hydro, oil, and energy from waste – such as the plant in Cardiff Bay.

"Then we looked at the networks that bring electricity and gas to us. We even touched on energy storing and sharing of energy with other countries through interconnectors.

"Then we finished up with how we use it, and how the gas and electricity we use can go green, and is already going green."

Oliver goes on to discuss how today's children will be the future's engineers. He said: "As well as good news in cutting the carbon in the energy supply, there's going to be many jobs for all these children.

"Some of them will be 40 in 2050 when we have our net zero target - and the work won't end then - there'll be lots more to do across the UK, but also in leading the rest of the world in their energy transition. I hope to see some hydrogen and electric engineers and managers coming from this school!”
