Hydrogen corridor proposed between UK and Germany
National Gas and Gascade have signed an agreement to explore a new offshore hydrogen pipeline linking the UK and Germany, with plans to deliver up to 20GW of bi-directional capacity. The proposed corridor would connect either Teesside or St Fergus with Gascade’s AquaDuctus pipeline in the North Sea—part of a wider European hydrogen backbone.
With state-level support and recognition as an Important Project of Common European Interest (IPCEI), AquaDuctus is already helping shape the continent’s hydrogen future. The partnership taps into the UK’s renewable strengths and Germany’s storage and demand, offering a shared solution to energy independence and security.
Both operators will pursue formal recognition in European planning frameworks, signalling the pipeline’s strategic importance in delivering a resilient, interconnected hydrogen economy.
