Fighting tool theft: The industry keeps up the pressure
Tradespeople, manufacturers and campaigners continue to press for change as a new bill tackling tool theft moves through Parliament.
Gas engineer Shoaib Awan is leading the charge. Earlier this year, he helped bring national attention to the issue by organising a van rally to Westminster, supported by hundreds of tradespeople. Since then, Shoaib has been working with police forces, MPs and Trading Standards to push for tougher sentencing, better regulation of second-hand sales, and a dedicated police taskforce.
According to Van Watch, tradespeople are 13 times more likely to have their van broken into than their home, with the average cost of stolen tools exceeding £2,200. Beyond the financial loss, theft also affects mental health and job security – major concerns for those working across the built environment.
Support from within the industry is growing. Manufacturers like Talon are calling for reform and standing with the trade to demand lasting change.
Shoaib is encouraging the community to stay engaged – by contacting MPs, reporting incidents and supporting colleagues affected by theft. “We’re stronger together,” he says.
