CO Research Trust launches Christopher Bielby summer studentship

The CO Research Trust has announced the launch of a new summer studentship programme, created in memory of its former Chair, Christopher Bielby, MBE.

Chris sadly passed away in July 2022 following a diagnosis of Motor Neurone Disease. He was a dedicated Trustee and Chair of the CO Research Trust (formerly the Gas Safety Trust) for over a decade, Chris remained an active contributor throughout his illness.

Throughout his career in the gas industry, Chris was a passionate advocate for nurturing young professionals at the start of their careers. In honour of this legacy, the Chris Bielby summer studentship programme has been established to support researchers and academics in the early stages of their work in the field of carbon monoxide (CO) research.

Studentship

Empowering the next generation of researchers

New for 2025, the programme is designed to encourage students to undertake carbon monoxide research. The studentship will offer up to £1,500 to support living costs over a six to eight-week research period.

Funding for the studentships is jointly provided by the CO Research Trust and the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM).

Ian McCluskey, Head of Technical Services and Policy at IGEM, said: “IGEM have a history of supporting programmes which encourage young people into careers in the gas industry. We are therefore delighted to extend this support to researchers looking into gas safety. Chris Bielby spent 50 years tirelessly lobbying and canvassing support for gas safety issues, so it is entirely fitting that this programme be named in his honour.”
