Chartered Week: Celebrating trusted professionals

IGEM is joining the wider professional community to celebrate the impact of Chartered practice and the people who uphold it.

Chartered Week, 23-27 February, shines a light on the value of professional standards across society. As a licensed Professional Engineering Institution with the Engineering Council, we're here to support engineers and technicians at every stage of their journey, including those working towards EngTech, IEng and CEng registration, helping them demonstrate competence, integrity and leadership.

This week provides us with an opportunity to recognise those individuals who are committed to professionalism, ethical practice and high standards, and to inspire the next generation of engineers.

This year, the Engineering Council is using Chartered Week to reinforce the importance of ethical behaviour and professional responsibility, alongside the launch of its updated statement of ethical principles. Professional registration is not simply a title. It is a public commitment to act ethically, make sound decisions and place safety and the public interest at the heart of engineering work.

Why chartership matters: Daniel Mee CEng
Daniel Mee 3

Chartered Engineer Daniel Mee, Principal Integrity Engineer at Cadent and a former winner of the Early Career Achievement Award at the Gas Industry Awards, is a strong advocate for professional registration.

For Daniel, becoming Chartered was about external recognition of his competence and commitment to engineering standards. He describes professional registration as “a journey, not a destination” and believes the post nominals provide reassurance and credibility, particularly when working with those outside the industry.

Progressing through the levels of registration helped him build confidence, demonstrate his development and embed lifelong learning into his career. Continuous professional development, seeking mentorship and taking opportunities to get involved beyond his day-to-day role have all been key to his growth.

Daniel’s story, which you can read in full on our website, highlights how Chartership supports both professional recognition and personal development.
