By Zenon Przybyszewski, North West Section Chair
The North West Section's Christmas lunch returned to the Mercure Hotel and Spa Blackburn, a beautiful 700-year-old country manor set in the Lancashire countryside.
This year’s attendance was a record breaking 227 delegates with an excellent three course meal with wine, in the splendidly decorated Pendle Suite [see photo]. Notable attendees were; the Vice President of IGEM, Ben Clarke, former NW Chairpersons Tony Brennan, Steve Anderton, Peter Jellis, Tommy Knott, Karl Miller, Phil Croft and John Holroyd-Doveton, long serving committee member and Yorkshire Gas Association’s Honorary Secretary.
Delegates were entertained by ‘Magician Harry’ during the event, who performed some amazing tricks before after dinner speaker, Eric Jones, a former Detective Superintendent with Manchester CID, with some entertaining stories.
As it is a charity event, we are pleased to declare a successful haul of £2,150 plus change from the raffle for our chosen recipients, the Pendle Hospice in memory of former IGEM North West Section Chair, Bill Maclean. Also, to Blessing in Disguise, a local charity that helps with all manner of educational and physical difficulties for children. The donation was accepted by Katie Holt who spoke before the lunch how the charity started and how they use donations for the small and sometimes larger items that simply make life more manageable for those that they help.
Thank you to all our sponsors for the kind raffle donations and their support for the event, who are in alphabetical order; Ameon, AVK, Cadent, Crane, Energy Assets, Fastflow, Last Mile, Lloyds Register, MCA Fusion Hire, J Murphy, Morgan Sindall, National Grid, Peak Pipe, PSS Hire, Simkiss, Synthotech and Utilise.
