In December, the Filton Holiday Inn hosted the South West Section’s autumn technical paper evening, ‘RIIO-GD2 The Plan is in!’

Attended by over 70 delegates, the presentation space was filled to capacity – another excellent turnout for this key event in the Section programme.

Eleven exhibitors, AVK, ALH Systems, Calverdale Technology, Gerberit, PSS Hire, Radius Systems, Rush Construction Services, Steve Vick International, Synthotech, Utonomy and Wales & West Utilities (WWU) took stands at the event, talking to delegates about their products and services before the presentations and later over an excellent evening buffet. Two further companies, Morrison Utility Services and PM Projen, also supported the event.

Following a brief welcome and introduction by Grant Rogers, South West Section Chair, Clive Book Wales & West Utilities’ Head of Emergency, Metering and Network Services, gave the opening presentation; a Dickensian themed view on the challenges of operating the WWU gas network through Christmases past, present and future, from GD1 to GD2.

Neil Dalley, WWU’s Area Engineering Manager, then explained his team’s formula for success, making the link between innovation and utilisation to deliver efficiency through the current price control period and into the next.

The agenda then turned to the future of energy, with Chris Clarke, WWU’s Energy Strategy Director taking the audience along WWU’s road to 2035.

Next, Martin Wayland, HM Principal Specialist Inspector in the Energy Division at HSE, completed the final presentation of the evening, discussing HSE’s role in the move to a carbon free economy.

Grant then chaired a short Q&A with the evening’s speakers before David Morgan, Past President of IGEM, was invited to the stage to give the vote of thanks.

The South West Section committee would like to express their sincere gratitude to the presenters, exhibitors and supporters, as well to the audience for their interest and engagement throughout the event. We look forward to seeing you all next time.
