Frequently asked questions about CPD

This will be IGEM’s fourth year of asking professional registered members to submit their CPD records for review. However, 2019 is the first year that it will be a mandatory requirement for members to submit their records. What exactly does CPD sampling mean to you? IGEM Professional Development Officer Ross McCart has the answers. 

When will I know if I’ve been selected? 

IGEM will contact those selected by the first week of June. You will be given four weeks to submit your CPD records to IGEM. 

What do I need to do if I am selected? 

If you receive an email or letter requesting your CPD records you simply need to return a record of your CPD activities for the last 12 months.

Hopefully, you’ve been recording these in an easy to access file and can simply send this into IGEM. If you don’t have easy access to your files, IGEM will provide a form that you can use to provide a summary of your activities. CPD can be recorded in various ways, such as via an Excel spreadsheet, in hard copy, Word docs, etc. IGEM will accept your records in any of these formats. However, we recommend that you use our online tool, mycareerpath. This tool can be accessed via the MyIGEM section of IGEM’s website. It can be used on smartphones, tablets, Macs and PCs, on the go or from the comfort of home. 

If you use mycareerpath to record your CPD then submitting your records is easy. You simply click on the report section and with a few clicks you can create a PDF report which can be emailed to IGEM. If you’re not using mycareerpath yet, it’s not too late. Contact IGEM Membership Services for more information, or dig out a copy of Gi from March 2016 (all back issues of Gi are available on the MyIGEM section of IGEM’s website or via the app), where you’ll find detailed information.

What if I have already provided my CPD to another Institution? 

If you've submitted your CPD record to another Professional Engineering Institution within the last 12 months, simply send in evidence that your CPD has been reviewed already and we'll accept this as your entry. 

What if I can’t provide a CPD record? 

If you have any problems, simply contact IGEM. It may be that you are exempt from CPD for reasons such as ill health, retirement, maternity/paternity leave, etc. If you’re not exempt, then IGEM can provide you with some advice and guidance or even provide a waiver for this year. The important thing is to contact IGEM and discuss your concerns. Please don’t ignore the request.

What if I don’t respond?

If you don’t respond, you will be automatically selected for next year’s CPD
sampling. IGEM will spend the next 12 months following up with you to ensure that you have the support and guidance you need. As your Institution, it’s our job to provide you with all the help we can.

What happens after I submit my CPD records for review?

Once you’ve submitted your CPD records to IGEM, they will be forwarded to a panel of reviewers. The review will take about eight weeks and once the review is complete you will received feedback that will hopefully help you with your future development. You will also be given the opportunity to provide feedback to IGEM on how you found the process.
