IGEM/G/5 - Gas in Multi-Occupancy Buildings

Course summary

New gas infrastructure must consistently meet the evolving requirements of UK legislation, and existing infrastructure be correctly maintained. This online course intends to help create a workforce that can address both these challenges, by preparing attendees for the exacting and high-profile nature of safe gas supply to multi-occupancy buildings. Drawing on lessons of the past, it stresses the need for all parties to understand their interdependent roles, their responsibilities, and the positive safety impacts of full cooperation and transparency throughout.

Course objectives

To provide attendees with the following:

• A command of the new IGEM/G/5 requirements (including their cross-over with GIG2)
• Recognition of all relevant stakeholders and what is required from each party
• Awareness of what can go wrong should any stakeholder neglect their responsibilities
• Comprehension of the specific design considerations imposed by multi-occupancy buildings
• Insight into how such design can impact on construction and installation methods
• An ability to implement necessary design requirements in both new and existing structures
• An understanding of installation considerations and when to apply specific techniques

The varied materials combine presentations, practical activities, working examples, interactive questions and group discussion. The course modules deliver learning on the following:

• Overview and the history of legislation in this context
• Reasons for recent changes
• The roles of each stakeholder in MOB
• The building regulations that define MOB gas infrastructure
• Design considerations and options available in different settings
• Construction considerations and controls
• Testing, commission and recommission of components and assets
• Effective safety labelling of installations and assets
• The impact of collaborative working
• The key importance of records and effective record keeping

Structural engineers, architects, consultants, designers involved in designing and building blocks of flats, gas transporters, gas suppliers, meter asset managers, gas Installers, landlords, building managers, social housing providers and local authorities.

This course provides a sound introduction for anyone involved in the design, construction, management or maintenance of multi-occupancy buildings, whether their role is technical, or management based.
 
Trainer Profile

Sheila Lauchlan is a self-employed Engineer and Director of Edinburgh-based consultancy, Perfect Dimensions Ltd.   As well as writing procedures for multi-utility infrastructure works and adopting the role of Technical Advisor for companies operating on the Multi Utility Registration Schemes, Sheila works as a Pipeline Engineer on complex high pressure pipeline projects.

She was a member of the IGEM/TD/1 Steel pipelines for high pressure gas transmission technical panel and currently sits on the IGEM/SR/28 Trenchless Techniques technical panel. She is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the IGEM.
