HyLine Cymru Update

Understand more about the development and delivery of hydrogen pipeline infrastructure in South Wales, and how HyLine Cymru is playing a key role in the South Wales Industrial Cluster.

Wales & West Utilities (WWU) provide critical infrastructure across Wales and south west England, and are looking at what new infrastructure is needed to maintain existing supplies of energy whilst transitioning towards the ability to deliver low-carbon hydrogen at scale.

South Wales has been recognised by the UK Government as an area of high industrial emissions, meaning that investment is needed to help decarbonise industry whilst protecting communities, jobs and the economy.

This is the purpose of HyLine Cymru – WWU’s proposal to build a new 130km hydrogen pipeline across South Wales from Pembroke to Port Talbot.

The pipeline will help unlock at least 4.5GW of offshore wind in the Celtic Sea by providing a route to market for clean energy producers. By linking into Project Union, the pipeline will also ensure that the South Wales gas network can provide the resilience it needs through access to large-scale storage sites across the UK.

HyLine Cymru will have the capacity to transport homegrown, low-carbon energy to hard-to-decarbonise customers, saving up to 3.2 million tonnes of CO2 per year. It could also help create and retain thousands of jobs.
