Howdon Biomethane Webinar

Tony Rutherford of Northumbrian Water Group (NWG) shares the history of the River Tyne and Howdon sewage treatment works, the NWL sludge strategy, advanced anaerobic digestion and Biomethane to Grid (G2G).

The North East and Yorkshire Section invite you to their webinar with Tony Rutherford, Treatment Woks Manager at NWG (Northumbrian Water Group). Tony will explore:

The History of the River Tyne and Howdon sewage treatment works

  • Take a step back in time and learn how the works were designed to give primary treatment to sewage from the north and south of the River Tyne. In more recent times, the site has utilised its renewable energy recovery potential by directly harnessing biogas from Advanced Anaerobic Digestion (AAD) operations and injecting it into the local Northern Gas Networks infrastructure

Northumbrian Water (NWL) sludge strategy

  • Understand how the life cycle of sludge is efficiently managed at NWL’s local handling centres

Advanced Anaerobic Digestion (AAD)

  • Understand the thermal hydrolysis process and how biogas from sludge digestion is used to generate green energy

Biomethane to Grid (G2G)

  • Learn how biogas produced from the Anaerobic Digestion Plant is upgraded and injected into the local gas network.

This event is ideal for anyone interested in environmental sustainability, waste management, energy production and the history of the River Tyne.
