The South West Section Autumn Technical Paper evening, titled ‘RIIO-GD2 the plan is in!’, took place on the evening of Tuesday 3 December at the Holiday Inn, Filton, near Bristol. My thanks to all who came along to enjoy yet another interesting and informative event. We had a huge turnout of over 70 delegates and filled the presentation space very excellently.

Eleven exhibitors (AVK, ALH Systems, Calverdale Technology, Gerberit, PSS Hire, Radius Systems, Rush Construction Services, Steve Vick International, Synthotech, Utonomy and WWU) took stands at the event, talking to delegates about their products and services before the presentations and again over an excellent buffet later in the evening. Two further companies (Morrison Utility Services and PM Projen) also supported the event.

I would like to express my sincere thanks to returning sponsors and a couple of new faces, as well as to their staff for supporting the event. I look forward to seeing you all again next time.

Following a brief introduction by myself, Clive Book gave his Dickensian themed view on the challenges of operating the Wales & West gas network through Christmas Past, Present and Future – GD1 to GD2; Neil Dalley then explained his team’s formula for success ‘E=(IU)2‘ making the link between Innovation and Utilisation to deliver Efficiency; Chris Clarke, WWU’s Energy Strategy Director then took the audience along WWU’s road to 2035 and their Net Zero Carbon Ready Network of the future; Martin Wayland, HM Principal Specialist Inspector in the Energy Division at HSE completed the final presentation of the evening discussing HSE’s role in the move to a Carbon Free Economy.

I am grateful to all of the presenters and to David Morgan, past president of IGEM, who gave the vote of thanks.
