IGEM welcomes today’s announcement from UK Government, committing to the cutting greenhouse gas emissions to “net-zero” by 2050 and urging other countries to follow suit. The announcement follows a report by the Committee on Climate Change published in May 2019 recommending the target.
IGEM’s CEO, Neil Atkinson, welcomes the announcement saying: “This is a significant commitment for the coming years. It is now crucial that policies are put in place that inspire confidence across industry and consumers and that support hydrogen’s role in the decarbonisation of the gas network.”
The announcement was timely, as IGEM today hosted it’s “Hydrogen – taking control of your future” Industrial Affiliate event. Bringing together industry keynote speakers to share information and insights from Hydrogen development projects across the UK.
Neil added: “Industry must now accelerate towards adoption of hydrogen in the transmission and distribution networks, as well as development of Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) clusters. This is an endeavour that IGEM, with its stakeholders, is vigorously supporting through the provision of new Technical Standards and enabling changes to Gas Quality legislation”.
