Matthew’s career took a different route when he embarked on a Bachelor of Engineering degree with the Open University in 2011. At the time he was employed by the Police as a civilian on the front line but his studies led him to apply, in 2015, for a role as Graduate Engineer with Wales & West Utilities.
Matthew feels fortunate that he was able to gain diverse experience by working with many departments across the business, completing several important projects, notably the creation of a strategy for distribution network valves. His knowledge base was extended by carrying out the role of the Wales & West Utilities representative for Technical Gas Industry Standards on the Technical Standards Forum.
During this time, an opportunity arose to complete his Master of Engineering degree, which he attained in 2019.
Since then, Matthew has been responsible for introducing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into Wales & West Utilities and incorporating them into the GD2 business plan (Ofgem’s approved business plan for 2021-2026). Most recently, he has been successful in achieving Chartered Engineer status with the IMechE.
In his spare time Matthew trains and competes in Brazilian jiu-jitsu & judo (Covid dependent) and enjoys reading, spending time with family, walking, running and training.
