IGEM statement regarding Coronavirus (Covid-19) - updated 30.04.20

A special video message from IGEM CEO Neil Atkinson about the impacts of COVID-19 on the Institution and on how our staff and members are responding in light of the crisis. You'll also hear about the steps IGEM is taking to support you, including the progressive launch of an expanded CPD service to members.

The situation regarding the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19) in the UK has evolved rapidly.

IGEM is monitoring the advice of  Public Health England and that of local and national government on a daily basis.

Safeguarding our staff

Steps have been taken to safeguard the well-being of the Institution’s secretariat, its members and volunteers. 

  • All of the Secretariat is working remotely until further notice
  • The office at IGEM House in Kegworth has been closed
  • The Secretariat is following advice and using audio and video conferencing facilities wherever possible to support the work of the Institution and its members
  • The Institution’s conference, events and training programme has been reviewed and a number of changes have been made to the schedule. An update regarding the current status of IGEM events can be found here. This is subject to further change depending upon the course of the lockdown.

Business continuity & furlough impacts

Whilst we have modified the way in which we operate the Institution is continuing to function as close to normal as possible.

It has been necessary to furlough some members of the staff team at this time. This is because of direct impacts of the Covid emergency on some areas of our operations. Consequently, there may be some delay in our responses to enquiries. Please bear with us as we work through this period.

The main contact number +44 (0)1509 678 150 is still in use as are the direct line numbers for each member of the Secretariat. The team will be picking up their emails as normal. Therefore you should not experience any difficulties getting in touch.

Heads of Department are liaising with their teams to ensure they have the resources necessary to continue with the activities of the Institution as far as is practicable.

If you have any concerns regarding your participation in a future IGEM activity please speak to your employer in the first instance who will help you assess the situation.

Members with financial difficulty may wish to refer to the IGEM Benevolent Fund.

Professional development support (CPD provision)

We are expanding our online offerings to members as quickly as we are able. This includes addition of resources to IGEM-TV, a Webinar programme and, shortly, introduction of online training.

Membership applications

We continue to receive membership applications and continue to conduct peer review interviews online.
