Mumtaz Patel changed her career path about 20 years ago. She went from working in the office to working on the front line.
Mumtaz is now responsible for the delivery of a £80m annual investment programme of major gas mains replacement projects, connecting thousands of homes and businesses safely and compliantly.
Mumtaz likes to use and share her experiences with the next generation of girls who like the idea of a career in engineering and also those who may not have considered it. She will tell them it is far from a mundane job; every day is different and rewarding. Never be pigeon-holed into something, be up for a challenge! It isn’t always easy, but the rewards are worth it.
Mumtaz has just been appointed as Sponsor of Women in Cadent (WIC). This is about creating equality and supporting women’s professional and personal development and building our network to ensure that we have a gender balanced culture. I want to encourage, inspire and support women at Cadent and in the industry as well. Mumtaz wants to share their role model so others can aspire – showcase our female talent.
Mumtaz is currently working closely with a Contract Management Organisation, Network Plus and our Local Delivery Partners to create female NCO1s and NCO2s – this will start to change the face of traditionally male roles. This is an ambitious and exciting goal.
One of Mumtaz's other goals is to refresh our STEM agenda– show all the diverse careers available in engineering by working with Schools, Colleges and Universities.
The future of gas is something she is very excited about. Mumtaz knows the next generation of engineers are extremely passion about the environment and sustainability. Cadent has a mission for a green future gas industry with Hydrogen very much at the forefront and we are already heavily involved. We’re playing a leading role and it think it is critical to share this.
