  • IGE/UP/9 – Gas turbines and supplementary and auxiliary fired burners

    • coves the application of Natural Gas (NG) and fuel oil systems for firing gas turbines and their interactions with gas and oil firing for supplementary and auxiliary fired burners
    • intends to provide basic guidelines, highlighting the essential features necessary to ensure the safe and reliable use of gas turbines using NG or fuel oil as the principal, or as an alternative or participant, fuel. The very wide range of burner types and configurations employed on different designs necessarily dictates that no single specification can be prepared to cover the details of how this Standard may be satisfied in all cases. Therefore, the aim is to establish the principal features of relevance to the safety of all installations, to deal in some detail with the techniques most commonly found in practice and, in so doing, to draw the reader's attention to the type of problem areas which may be encountered. In very many cases, the engineer involved will need to examine closely the individual installations with which they are concerned in order to ensure that safety, to an equal or better standard than that outlined, is provided. The details of how this is done are too varied to be specified rigidly and are, in many cases, subject to continuous revision by manufacturers in this very rapidly expanding field of technology. In addition to these Procedures, it is necessary to refer to the manufacturer's instructions
    • applies to both single and multi-shaft turbine types
    • applies to both single and multiple burner types
    • applies to turbines exhausting to heat recovery equipment, with or without supplementary and/or auxiliary fired burners, which may or may not have air supplies other than the engine exhaust. Those having independent air supplies are also considered as auxiliary fired.

  • IGEM/UP/11 - Educational establishments

    • provides requirements for those concerned with the design, installation, operation and maintenance of gas pipework, systems and appliances in educational establishments, including schools; colleges; universities and training facilities. It brings together:
      • guidance, interpretation and clarification of legislation, Standards and codes of Practice (CoPs) indicating the degree to which compliance is required, including those items that are applicable, and
      • current best practice and design in the installation and use of Natural Gas (NG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) installations.
    • sets down the minimum requirements for safety in educational establishments, for architects, designers, science health and safety advisers, teaching and technical staff, in the operation of their systems and equipment. It is recognised that a risk assessment in some educational establishments may indicate a need for additional features such as larger valve handles, more easily accessible controls, signage in more than one language, in Braille, or lower levels of carbon dioxide (CO2) within the teaching areas for specific health reasons. The responsibility for such measures lies with competent persons having responsibility for the design of the installation.
    • covers the design, installation, operation and maintenance of gas pipework, systems and appliances used for teaching purposes in educational establishments, including schools; colleges; universities and training facilities.
    • covers piped gas supplied:
      • from gas distribution systems such as a NG distribution system or a LPG central bulk storage system
      • through independent LPG supplies i.e. either a cylinder or an individual bulk storage vessel.

  • IGEM/UP/16 - Design for Natural Gas installations on industrial and commercial premises with respect to hazardous area classification and preparation of risk assessments

    • intends to provide basic design information to enable designers and those undertaking risk assessments to achieve a gas installation that can be classified and maintained as Zone 2 Negligible Extent (Zone 2 NE)
    • is primarily for designers of new industrial and commercial pipework systems, downstream of the primary gas meter installation
    • is useful for site occupiers who have the responsibility for compliance with DSEAR and for the production of site risk assessments for existing systems and new installations. Hazardous area assessment is normally a specialist activity requiring the application of IGEM/SR/25 Edition 2
    • covers new gas installation pipework, controls and associated gas appliances including appliance connections and pipework with an OP not exceeding 2 bar installed downstream of the primary meter installation in industrial and commercial premises
    • may also apply to parts of common pipework within multi-occupancy domestic premises; for example, between pipework risers downstream of the meter installation and also to the central boiler plant. For hazardous area analysis of installations outside the scope of the Standard, reference should be made to IGEM/SR/25 Edition 2.

    • summarises best practice in the use and maintenance of new and existing "shared flues" systems i.e. shunt duct, Se-duct, U-duct systems, and fabricated shared chimney/flue systems (communal flue systems (CFSs))
    • intends to make designers, installers, maintenance personnel and landlords aware of the safety issues surrounding the use of shared flue systems
    • does not cover the installation of new shared flue systems as this is given in BS 5440-1. Once such systems are in place, it is applicable when replacement appliances and also to their subsequent use, maintenance and de-commissioning
    • assists in the identification of shared flue/chimney systems, replacement of appliances on such systems and any maintenance/decommissioning work required.
