For definitions of the Network see IGEM/G/1 and IGEM/G/4.

IGEM Standard Series

IGEM Standards are published on a specific subject. Currently IGEM publishes Standards in the following Series:

  • Transmission and Distribution (TD Series)
These standards cover transmission and distribution activities. They address planning, materials, design, construction, testing, commissioning, corrosion protection, operation, maintenance, risk assessment, pigging, surveying and stress analysis of all Natural Gas transmission and Network pipelines, including associated installations, for maximum operating pressures up to 100 bar.
  • Gas Measurement (GM Series)
Cover activities pertaining to the Meter installation. These Standards address planning, materials, design, construction, location, housing, testing, commissioning, operation, maintenance and labelling of gas meter installations in Networks and on consumers' premises. These Standards apply for all meters on industrial and commercial premises and for meters for flows greater than 6 cubic metres per hour on domestic premises.
  • Utilization (UP Series)
Cover Industrial, Commercial and Domestic utilisation activities. IGE/UP/1, UP/1A and UP/1B address the strength testing, tightness testing and purging of gas installations downstream of any emergency control valve. UP/1 covers all gases whereas UP/1A and UP/1B cover just Natural Gas.

IGE/UP/2, 3, 6, 9, 10 and 12 address the design and construction of industrial and commercial sized plant and appliances, and UP/4 specifies commissioning procedures for such plant. IGE/UP/7, 8 and 11 address the special cases of gas installations in timber and steel framed buildings, holiday park homes, etc. and educational establishments.
  • Legislation (GL Series)
Give advice on Legislation affecting the Gas Industry. T
hese Standards are intended to assist in compliance with legislation, primarily aspects of the Gas Safety (Management) Regulations (IGE/GL/1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8), but also the Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations and the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (IGE/GL/8).
  • General (G Series)
Cover activities affecting both Upstream and Downstream installations.
This series of Standards addresses special issues such as recommended gas supply arrangements (IGE/G/1) and gas supplies to and within buildings containing multiple individual dwellings, for example blocks of flats (IGEM/G/5).
  • Safety Series (SR Series)
Cover common activities related to specific items of plant.
These Standards address safety issues relating to practices such as design and maintenance (low pressure gas holders (SR/4), high pressure storage tanks (SR/14); dealing with gas escapes (SR/29); working near gas pipes (SR/18); purging (SR/22); venting (SR/23); trenchless techniques (SR/28); designing programmable equipment (SR/15); designing and operating odorant injection plant (SR/16) and hazardous area assessments (SR/25).
