Shale Gas Conference 28 March 2012
IGEM will be hosting their first UK Shale Gas
Conference to stimulate the debate on shale gas along with Durham
University's Department of Earth Sciences.
Wednesday 28 March 2012
Recent discoveries of vast reserves in the UK could create
thousands of jobs as well as reduce Britain's dependence on foreign
supplies of gas. In partnership with Durham University, IGEM
are hosting the organsation's first Shale Gas conference on
Thursday 28 March 2012 at Durham University. Much debate
and discussion will happen at the plenary sessions regarding
exploration practices, benefits of shale gas and also debunk some
of the myths surrounding the process of fracking.
Based upon a research report by IGEM entitled Shale Gas - A UK
Energy Miracle, IGEM believes that greater standards need to be
implemented to regulate the industry so that practices adopted
abroad are not replicated but a smart fit for the needs of the UK
and individual countries where possible. As a standard maker in its
own right the organisation recommends the need to develop a
standard for the exploration and development of Shale Gas. In fact
the event will help to inform new codes of practice for UK shale
gas exploitation, and of building UK and European research capacity
in shale gas and other unconventional gas sources.
The conference programme outlines the presentations
which will be delivered from recognized experts in all areas of the
field concerning shale gas, coupled with workshops and plenary
discussions, the IGEM Shale Gas Conference represents a unique
opportunity to inform the future directions of shale gas
exploitation, regulation and research in the UK, Europe, and
beyond.
Durham University will be hosting site visits on Tuesday 27
March 2012 and also Thursday 29 March 2012.

Tony Grayling, Head of Climate Change and Communities at the
Environment Agency, leading on cross-cutting issues including
climate change, sustainable communities and planning. He was
previously a special adviser to David Miliband and Hilary Benn at
DEFRA, helping to design the Climate Change Act 2008. From 2002 to
2006 he was an associate director and head of the sustainability
team at the Institute for Public Policy Research, which he joined
in 1999 as a research fellow. He was a special adviser to the
Minister for Transport, Gavin Strang, from 1997-98 during the
development of the 1998 integrated transport white paper and before
that a researcher successively to Labour MPs Ron Davies and Anne

University.

Dr Claire Curtis-Thomas (Chief Executive Officer,
IGEM)
Dr Claire Curtis Thomas (CEng), Chief Executive of the
Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM), has vast
experience in the energy and engineering sectors. Previously she
held executive position in Shell, British Gas and Birmingham City
Council.
Her extensive work in the field of engineering has led to her
being awarded Fellowships from the Institution of Mechanical
Engineers (IMechE), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET)
and the City and Guilds Institute (CGI). Claire was elected to the
Board of the IMechE and the Engineering Council for approximately
20 years between 1990 and 2010.
Claire was elected to Parliament in 1997-2010 and sat on a
number of prestigious committees including the Trade & Industry
and Science & Technology Select Committees, she also chaired
cross-party groups which focussed on Construction and
Engineering.
Over the past 20 years, Claire has established a number of
charities which promote Science and Engineering to young people in
the UK and the development of literacy and technical skills in
developing countries.

Toni Harvey, Sr Geoscientist, Department of Energy and
Climate Change
Toni Harvey is a graduate of Colorado School of Mines and
Birkbeck College, Toni has been working as a Geoscientist in Govt
since she left Amoco/BP when oil was $10/barrel, 11 year ago. At
DECC, she has responsibility for the geotechnical evaluation of
onshore Great Britain, offshore Southern North Sea and Irish Sea
licence applications, well consents, and onshore field development
consent. More recently, she has spent more of her time on Shale
gas, working to put as much information as possible in to the
public domain, and advising press and policy colleagues who respond
to issues raised - in the media, by ministers and members of the
public.

Huw Clarke, Exploration Geologist, Cuadrilla Resources
Ltd
Huw Clarke is an exploration geologist working for Cuadrilla
Resources Ltd. Huw read geology at the University of Bristol where
he was awarded the Kearey memorial prize for outstanding excellence
in the field of geological mapping. He went on to complete his
Masters degree and publish his thesis which focused on fracture
evolution during hydraulic stimulation shown by variation in shear
wave anisotropy measured from passive microseismic data. Huw
started his working career in Western Australia as a mineral
exploration consultant. After a year of tireless outback
exploration he moved back to the UK to join Cuadrilla Resources in
2009. Since being with Cuadrilla, Huw has focussed on
multiple European onshore shale gas basins, working them up into
primary exploration targets. Amongst other tasks, Huw has
been the senior well site geologist for Cuadrilla's Bowland shale
operations and conducted the geological operations for the Preese
Hall 1 shale gas discovery well.

Nick Grealy of No Hot Air
Nick Grealy is director of the energy consultancy No Hot Air,
specialising in public perception and acceptance issues of shale
energy worldwide. Born in the UK, Nick moved to New York City in
his teens and lived in the United States for over two
decades. A graduate of New York University, Nick's US based
career included working for utility Con Edison, Chase Manhattan
Bank North African Finance and the City of New York Home Energy
Assistance Program. He returned to the UK and started a
career in the UK energy industry at London Electricity, Total Gas
Marketing, Energy Quote and Utilities Specialist for the Department
of Health. Describing himself as a "recovering energy consultant"
who thinks the worst energy risk is getting talked into thinking
you have one, he started following the shale energy revolution in
2008. First studying what he called at the time shale's
sudden emergence and future permanence he now studies shale's
impact worldwide across the energy spectrum. He has worked
for private and public clients across Europe and is a frequent
contributor to media while continuing to publish analysis of energy
acceptance issues at www.nohotair.co.uk

John Baldwin, Managing Director

1983-2003), including:
BGE&P - Armada Project Commercial Manager
Transco - Manager, Network Development
Lattice Group/National Grid - MD, Lattice Energy Services
His company, CNG Services Limited (CSL) provides design,
consultancy and project delivery services in relation to: Injection

Richard Selley, Senior Research Fellow and Emeritus
Professor of Petroleum Geology at Imperial College,
London,
Richard Selley has spent most of his career at
Imperial College apart from some years employed by oil companies in
the North Sea and overseas. Richard has been involved in petroleum
exploration in the UK and abroad for 50 years, both as an academic
researcher and as a consultant. He identified and evaluated the
UK's shale gas resources in the mid-1980's but industry, academia
and the Department of Energy were underwhelmed at the findings.
After many rejections by UK learned journals his research into UK
shale gas was published in the USA.
Now recognised as the 'Rip van Winkle' of UK shale gas,
Richard's advice on shale gas exploration has been widely sought
both as a consultant and lecturer. He was the first witness
summoned to give evidence to the Parliamentary Select Committee of
Enquiry into Shale gas in February 2011.
Richard has received various national and international
honours including the Silver Medal of the Geological Society of
London awarded for excellence in petroleum geoscience. He is an
Honorary Member of the Petroleum Exploration Society of
GB.
