Manx Gas - Natural Gas Conversion in the 21st Century

Manx Gas is a fully integrated gas business in the Isle of Man. Manx Gas imports, distributes and retails natural gas, LPG/Air and LPG through piped distribution networks and also supplies LPG in bottled and bulk form to domestic, commercial and industrial users. Natural Gas was first brought to the Isle of Man in 2003 when around two thirds of customers were converted to natural gas. The current project to convert the vast majority of the remaining customers involves the Manx Government investing in an extension to the existing on island transmission system and Manx Gas taking various distribution off-takes to connect to existing non-natural gas distribution networks.

Neil Shaw will give an overview of Brookfield Utilities UK, International Energy Group and in particular Manx Gas and how the current conversion project came about.  Aidan Baglow will provide an overview of the key stages of the conversion project focusing on the technical and customer service challenges of converting the networks and customers appliances.

About the presenters

Neil Shaw is Chairman of International Energy Group Limited which operates the fully integrated gas businesses in the Channel Islands and Isle of Man. He is also Chief Executive of Brookfield Utilities UK Limited which through GTC and Power On Connections provides a wide range of energy connection services to developers of housing, commercial and industrial schemes. GTC holds both an IGT licence and IDNO licence with nearly 500,000 connected supply points. Both IEG and BUUK are owned by Brookfield Infrastructure Partners. Prior to his career with Brookfield Neil spent nearly 25 years with British Gas, Transco and National Grid Gas in various senior management roles including Head of Engineering Policy, Asset General Manager for East Anglia and East Midlands and Connections and Metering Policy Manager.

Aidan Baglow is Conversion Project Manager for Manx Gas responsible for the technical design and delivery of the project to convert the LPG/Air and LPG networks on the Isle of Man to natural gas. Prior to this, Aidan was senior manager responsible for customer service and gas safety. Before joining Manx Gas, Aidan provided project management and consultancy services to several gas specific projects around the UK including provision of gas safety consultancy services to the 2003 Isle of Man natural gas conversion project, including design and management of the subsequent gas safety audits. Prior to this, Aidan spent nearly 13 years with British Gas in various engineering roles.
