Engineering Technician Members are involved in the application of proven technology and procedures to the solution of practical problems. They have supervisory and technical responsibility and contribute to the design, development, manufacture, commissioning and maintenance of products, equipment, processes and services.

Entry Requirements

There are two ways to gain the grade of Engineering Technician Member, Standard Route and Individual Route.

Standard Route

Candidate seeking professional Engineering Technician registration, who hold particular types of qualifications, will usually find that this greatly simplifies the process of becoming an Engineering Technician

Typical Qualifications are:

  • A National Certificate or National Diploma in Engineeing or Construction and the Built Environment.
  • An approved qualification in Engineering or construction at level 6 in Scottish Qualifications and Credit Framework.
  • A City & Guilds Higher Professional Diploma in Engineering.
  • A technical certificate as part of an approved Advanced Modern Apprenticeship Programme.
  • An IGEM approved Level 3 NVQ or SVQ.

Individual Route

Candidates for Engineering Technician without the qualifications listed above may be able to apply for a Individual Route appraisal. This separate procedure, administered by IGEM, involves an in depth appraisal of knowledge and experience acquired. Experienced, practising professional Engineering Technicians are often found to have gained the necessary knowledge and skills for their job through working closely with other skilled colleagues over a number of years. This appraisal will be undertaken through a work place assessment where the assessor will visit the candidate's workplace to appraise knowledge and experience acquired.

Initial Professional Development

IPD may be expected to take at least 4 years and it is a requirement to demonstrate competence and commitment applied in the gas industry. The Institution may reserve the right to invite an applicant for a Professional Review Interview if necessary.
