The International Gas Union (IGU) was founded in London in 1931 and the UK represented by IGEM (then IGE) was a founder member. Today IGU is a not for profit organisation, whose vision is to serve the interests of its members as a spokesman for the gas industry worldwide co-operating with many global energy organisations.
IGUs stated objective is to promote the technical and economic progress of the gas industry. IGU has members from over 70 countries worldwide, representing approximately 95% of global gas sales.
Every three years IGU organises a World Gas Conference (WGC) and associated exhibition and the next WGC is due to be held in Buenos Aries in October 2009.The programme for the WGC is developed and organised through a number of working level committees covering technical aspects of the gas industry from exploration through to end-use, together with environmental, social, economic, and regulatory issues. Membership of the working level committees provided a unique benefit to IGU members in providing a means to acquire market intelligence, promote technology transfer, benchmark performance and compare best practice.
Development of the WGC programme is overseen by the IGU Executive Committee who meet twice a year to review progress and provide strategic guidance. The IGU Executive has elected representatives from members in Europe, Asia, Russia, and the Americas (AGA represent the USA). Meetings are held in rotation in different member counties. This time, the meeting was scheduled to be hosted by IGEM in London in June 2009, the first time for over 10 years the meeting has been in the UK.
