IGEM Flame - The eNewsletter of the Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers
IGEM Flame - Keep Enlightened

Andy Wagg - CEO

Dear %%FNAME%%,

Welcome to this edition of the IGEM Flame, our e-newsletter.

Some of you may be unaware that I have taken on the role of CEO on an interim basis following the departure of John Williams in September. In common with many of you my roots within the gas industry go way back to the 70’s and the old gas regions. However, unlike most of you my background is Finance rather than Engineering I therefore became involved with IGEM through the Member Manager route. This led to being a member of the Midlands Section Committee, Council Trustee and now to a full time position – albeit on a temporary basis.

This role has some significant challenges. Primarily we need to address the long term trends in membership. Overall, our numbers have been steadily declining over recent years. In addition the average age of our membership is increasing. Reversing the trend means not only attracting new members but also creating a net inflow through the grades right up to Chartered Engineer status. But this is not just a numbers game. Increases in membership can only be sustained if we continue to develop the quality of service that we provide to our individual members and our Industrial Affiliates.

In 2001 IGEM vacated its London office in Portland Place and moved into rented space in Loughborough. Well, as you know we have now moved again, this time we have purchased IGEM House here in Kegworth, near the East Midlands airport. However, whilst moving into our new headquarters has many advantages, it does mean that our interest earning investments have reduced. We are therefore seeking to replace this income by marketing the use of our meeting rooms and conference facilities on those days when we don’t need them. Remember that as members you can use the membership room free of charge for small meetings and you get a discount on the rates for the larger rooms. Better still, if you know anyone looking for a venue point them in our direction! Details are on the website or you can call on 01509 678166.

Yours sincerely
Andy Wagg
Chief Executive Officer

IGEM/G/4, Definitions for the Gas Industry (Communication 1739) This Standard provides definitions of terms used in Institution of Gas Engineers and Managers (IGEM) Standards.

The definitions have been agreed between the relevant IGEM Committees responsible for the publication of IGEM Standards.

The Standard recognises inconsistency between definitions within IGEM Standards issued up to September 2009 due to the time period over which those Standards were developed. It attempts to consolidate the varied use of different terms across IGEM Standards, to provide a base for their future amendment and to represent current best practice.

Definitions contained within IGEM Standards published prior to 1st September 2009 may continue to be used until such time as that Standard is made obsolete. Where an IGEM Standard published on or after 1st September 2009 does not contain definitions, this Standard applies.

IGEM/G/4 is freely available:

  • as a CD, with the purchase of any IGEM Standard, upon request
  • by downloading a printable version from the IGEM Website.

Did you know IGEM sells sets of its most popular Standards? These are available at a much reduced price than if brought separately! Click here for more information.
