Welcome to the September edition of the IGEM Flame, our e-newsletter.

My name is Peter Hurst and I am IGEM’s Technical Officer. I joined IGEM over a year ago now and work on supporting IGEM’s many technical committees and panels to produce our technical standards.

Please see the technical section of the Flame for the latest news from the technical department.

We have lots of events coming up before the end of the year which you may interested in so please have a look at the list below and click the links for more information on the IGEM website. There are lots more Section events on the IGEM website. Also from a technical perspective, places at the Hazardous Area Classification Symposium on 13 October are filling up fast so make sure you reserve your place soon.

Events Recruitment - Vacancy of the Month

IGEM is organising a selection of prestigious events in 2009 and you can download the full list here. The IGEM Flame will keep you informed on the latest events throughout the year.

24 September – Scottish Section Paper EveningIan Currie, Alliance Manager, Electricity Alliance East (OHL & Cables), UK Construction, will give a presentation on “The Development of UK Gas Transmission System”. This will Fulcrum’s Vantage Point Offices and start at 6.00pm. For further information click here.

8 October – London and Southern Section Paper Evening Tony House, Smart Supply Project Director for Scottish and Southern Energy will give a presentation on “Smart Supply”. This will be held at the SSE/SGN Depot in Oxford and start at 6.00pm. For further information click here.  

13 October - Hazardous Area Classification Symposium - Do you want to keep abreast of the latest highly significant changes in the current methods of hazardous area classification? Do you want to get an update on current and future industry practices to comply with DSEAR? If yes, then this event is for you!

IGEM has arranged a symposium on 13 October for you to be amongst the first to get an update on the new standards for downstream installations and a summary of the recent HSL research on low pressure gas releases.

15 October – Midlands Section Paper Evening Johnny Johnston, Project Manager, Sustainable Gas Group – National Grid, will give a presentation on “Renewable Gas”. This will be held at National Grid’s Warwick offices and start at 5.30pm. For further information click here

21 October - Managing Energy Emergencies - Could you manage your business in the event of a pandemic emergency? Do you want to know how the future changes in the energy industry and government could affect how you respond to emergencies? Squire Energy is currently looking to recruit a Project Manager to work in London and the South East. Ideally, candidates will already live within a 20-mile radius of central London.

This challenging and varied role is primarily to manage our contractors and to ensure we continue to deliver the excellent levels of service expected by our customers. This position requires people with good customer liaison skills and a proven track-record in contractor management and project delivery, on time and to budget.

Part of the Project Manager’s duties will require them to arrange, attend and facilitate pre-start and regular meetings with our customers, suppliers and contractors. Applicants will need to possess relevant natural gas technical, supervisory and NRSWA qualifications and be IT literate.

IGEM News Other News Gas International : In the next issue

Technical Report Option Workshop - The Membership department is holding a technical report workshop for members and their mentors who are considering this route to registration or who have already started the process but need some extra guidance. Technical:

Draft IGEM/TD/13 Edition 2, Pressure regulating installations for Network pipeline systems, pipelines and pipes, is now available for industry comment. The draft can be downloaded by clicking here, and comments can be submitted by downloading and completing the Comments Submission Form. Once completed the form should be emailed to technical@igem.org.uk. The deadline for Comments is Friday 23 October.

IGEM Committees: IGEM has a number of Committees working to support the Council and Secretariat in achieving the Institution’s business objectives. At the present time several of these Committees are seeking new members, therefore if you could be interested in joining them then please get in touch. Specifically we are looking for members for technical, finance and journal committees, and a new website project group.
